Education Books on my Reading List

On the back of a recent assignment for my MAT program, I have been exploring some education books for professional development and personal enjoyment. I happened to find a few while sitting in an English classroom in which I've been subbing and a few more around the web.

This is one of the books I found laying around the English class. It does, indeed, look like an entertaining read that will help guide the reader to deeper, more symbolic reading of literature. I want to read this book for entertainment as much as with teaching in mind. After really starting to stretch my legs in a history course, I've found I enjoy exploring a curriculum. Though I still have some work to do on my US History teaching portfolio, I'm also interested in exploring English Literature as a course. I think this book could be a great start to that exploration.

This is a book on the kinds of learning experiences that result in changed practices and better results for students. I think that I have learned most of understanding of teachers from watching them or listening to stories of successes and failures, so I think this kind of book would be helpful. I am also interested to see how the authors have incorporated technology into these learning designs.

While this is a book of literary essays, I think it could be useful for both history and English courses. Some of the essays could be good for getting an understanding of social history (such as the essay by Zora Neale Hurston).

This is another find in the English classroom. I think one of the struggles many history students have is keeping their writing interesting and not as dry as many of the history books and documents that they have read (this might also be a problem they have with reading history). Having a distinct voice might be a teachable remedy to this problem, helping students find their opinions and some kind of voice to express those opinions. Working through this problem may also help my own writing, which will somewhat affect my students as well. Teaching by modeling is always a great tool to use, especially with writing.
